🎄 Being Gentle With Yourself During the Holidays: Finding the Balance Between Rest, Movement, and Enjoyment

The holiday season is one of the most joyful times of the year — lights, family, cozy moments, good food, and a break from our normal routines. But for many of us, it’s also the time when pressure starts creeping in. Pressure to “stay perfect,” to not fall off track, to avoid certain foods or feel guilty when we don’t, to hit every workout, or to keep our goals moving forward without missing a beat.

But here’s the truth:
You don’t need to choose between enjoying your holiday season and honoring your health. You can do both — gently, intentionally, and without guilt.

This week, I want to talk about what it really looks like to stay grounded in your goals while giving yourself grace through the holiday season. The secret? Finding balance.

✨ 1. This is a season — not a setback

Your routine will look different during the holidays. That’s normal.

Travel, family schedules, events, unexpected plans… everything shifts. But a season of flexibility isn’t a sign that you’ve lost progress — it’s a sign that you’re human.

Instead of trying to “out-discipline” the holidays and miss out on all of the wonderful enjoyment and memories that accompany them, ask yourself:
What’s realistic for me right now?
Your goals can adapt for a few weeks without losing momentum. In fact, flexibility often protects your long-term progress.

✨ 2. Honor your goals… with compassion

You don’t need to pause your health journey — you just need to adjust how you show up in it and be okay if it isn’t perfect.

Ways to stay connected to your goals without burnout:

  • Choose movement that feels good, not movement that feels like punishment.

  • Prioritize protein and colorful foods when you can — and enjoy holiday favorites when they come. Life is meant to be lived. Remember, everything can be enjoyed in moderation!

  • Keep hydration steady (your energy will thank you).

  • Stick to a gentle routine like a morning walk, a 20-minute lift, or a quick mobility session. Bonus if you do this with friends and/or family!

Small actions add up. Consistency looks different in December, but it still counts.

✨ 3. You’re allowed to enjoy the moments — fully

Holiday food isn’t “bad.”
Rest isn’t “lazy.”
Time with family isn’t “falling off track.”

These things are part of a full, healthy life. You make memories, you feel comfort, you give yourself rest and well well-deserved break.

You work hard the other 11 months of the year. You’re allowed to slow down, savor the season, and soak in the memories — without thinking about macros or gym schedules the whole time.

Taking care of your mental and emotional health IS taking care of your physical health.

✨ 4. Let rest be part of the plan

Your body repairs itself during downtime — not during the hustle.

So if this season looks like:
✨ more sleep
✨ cozy mornings
✨ fewer workouts
✨ more long walks
✨ saying “yes” to connection and “no” to overbooking

…that’s something to celebrate.

Rest makes you stronger. Not weaker. Plus, the more you rest, the stronger you will come back.

✨ 5. Move in ways that feel joyful, not forced

Movement shouldn’t feel like a chore you “have to check off” before you’re allowed to enjoy your day. It also shouldn’t feel like something that needs to be done as punishment for enjoying yourself.

This season, think:

  • Walks with family or friends

  • A quick bodyweight circuit

  • Stretching while you watch a holiday movie

  • A fun group class

  • A hotel gym pump to clear your head

  • A dance party in the kitchen while baking cookies

Movement is a gift — not a punishment for enjoyment.

✨ 6. Remember the big picture

Your progress doesn’t come from one perfect week. Or one perfect month. It isn’t lost in that time frame either.
It comes from how you show up over time.

The holidays aren’t the moment where everything “falls apart.” They’re the moments where you practice the exact skill that creates lifelong health:

Balance.

Choosing what matters.
Being kind to yourself.
Staying intentional without being rigid.
Letting life happen without guilt.
Honoring your body while enjoying your people and your memories.

That’s health.

That’s sustainable fitness.
